Terminology

There are various words used throughout the industry to describe a modular or portable building and to clarify these we have listed the ones most commonly used;

Modular Buildings: Are single, double or multi storey buildings made up of individual modules that are then transported to site and erected to form a larger area.

Portable Cabin: Is a term used to describe a self contained unit with four walls. Cabins generally have jack legs fitted to keep the unit level and off the ground.

Pre-fabricated buildings: Is a term used to describe buildings manufactured under factory conditions prior to delivery to site.

Temporary buildings: Is a term used for both modular buildings and portable cabins when the use of the building is of a temporary nature.

Volumetric buildings: Is an alternative term used to describe a modular building.

Mobiles: Is a term used by schools to describe normally a single classroom building consisting of 3 modules or a double classroom building consisting of 5 modules. 

Relocatable Buildings: Is a term used to describe both a modular building and portable cabin which can be relocated to another site at a later time.

Anti Vandal Buildings: Is a term used to describe an all steel constructed self contained building that is more resistant to vandalism.
